Today is my two year anniversary of cutting off the tresses that once was relaxed. It was a moment of releasing myself and embracing the newness life had to bring. This journey had many meanings. I was on assignment in Europe away from the closest people dearest to my heart which was my husband and two boys as well as my family and friends.
Although use to traveling due to being a military brat, I was still challenged to a new environment that I never experienced before ALL BY MYSELF. As I arrived January 1, 2012 and felt the cold temperature on my face and walked the cobble stone streets of Haarlem, Netherlands I decided I was going to challenge myself to not get a relaxer anymore and see how long I could transition. Plus, initially trying to find hair products for black hair was hard until I inquired around town.
I transitioned for 8 months and the two textures wasn’t working anymore for me. So I decided I had enough new growth to give me a TWA (Teeny Wheeny Afro) well it wasn’t that Teeny and I did the BC in August 2012.
The growth and journey have been great! The responses have been positive and I have grown and learned so much about myself. I have learned to embrace my natural hair, my imperfections and that confidence is “key”.
For you ladies that are thinking about going natural or transitioning it’s definitely a journey that takes work. When people say it’s easy; it’s not. You have to find products that work for YOUR hair texture. When you wake up in the mornings, some days are good and some are not so good. But for me it was all worth it and still is!
